Afterword
Disclaimer: LearnGullah.blogger.com.es is not sponsored or reviewed in any way by the Gullah/Geechee Nation. This is a project we've done with our most sincere and fair intention. At all times we back our research and believe that we have represented an introduction to the Gullah Language and Culture. However, when carrying out research regarding living participants and thriving societies, there is the ever present risk of arriving at conclusions or methodological disagreements with the participants. As such, we've decided to write this piece as an afterword, to explain how we see our research to have been.
This project began out of personal interested to shred light into the Gullah culture and language here in Spain. As such, we carried our research with the fairest of intentions, checking the reliability of our sources and compiling information that would not only be appealing, but informative and non-partisan. In so doing, and given our distant perspective, we may have run into biases. If we did, we are sorry.
However, the passionate response by representatives of the Gullah/Geechee community against our research makes us believe that this would be an excellent learning opportunity. We are not dealing with isolated features or historical facts. When we deal with languages, we deal with people. Their language, their dialect, is their identity. Our language is who we are. As such, we need to be utterly careful when researching, but never lose our critical gaze. As such, we stand behind our research.
It is painful for us to acknowledge that our research was not approved of by the highest representative of the Gullah/Geechee Community. Yet we do think that our work is reliable. We appreciate the disagreements represent the essential human and relevant importance of this kind of research. We hope that, throughout this project, you've learned that culture, history, language, and identity are essentially intertwined, and we hope that you are able to appreciate this when studying any other language or dialect.
Peace!
Silvia and Jaime.
